Opto-isolators use optical LEDs and photosensitive transistors to isolate two serial devices. There is no electrical path from one connected serial device to the other connected serial device. Opto-isolated converters protects your RS232/RS485/RS422 devices from transient surges, lightning and voltage spikes. Opto-isolators also eliminate noise and ground loop because the ground signals of two connected devices are separated.
Surge suppressors limit and suppress voltage levels above a certain voltage threshold. Our RS485 and Ethernet surge suppressors are passive devices with voltage protection circuitry and have multiple levels of protection.
Opto-isolation differs for surge suppressors in the method of voltage spike protection. Opto-isolators protect by eliminating a electrical path between the two connected serial devices where suppressors actually suppress the voltage level. If a device damaging voltage spike strikes a opto-isolated converter it will damage the converter but at the same time protect the expensive equipment it is attached to.
