DESCRIPTION

The SerialComm USB-485C is a high quality, high performance bi-directional port powered USB to RS485 / RS422 converter in a 9 pin format. It can convert any standard full duplex USB port to a RS485 or RS422 signal in either direction via a COM port on the host computer. The USB to RS485 / RS422 converter utilizes the FTDI chipset making it compatible with most computer systems and operating systems. The unit is powered from the USB port and requires no external power. It also features data direction auto-turnaround eliminating the need for flow control. The USB-485C features two professional terminal blocks (one for RS485 and other for RS422) with optional selectable 120 Ohm termination via a jumper. The USB-485C has a Type A female connector on the USB side and a DB9 male connector on the RS485/RS422 side. The terminal block and software drivers are included with the converter.

The USB-485C uses the latest FTDI chipset and is fully compatible with (32 /64 bits) versions of Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, and 98: Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2, 2012, 2008 R2, 2008, 2003 R2, 2003 Mac 10.3 – 10.15, and Linux.

TERMINATION GUIDE

The USB-485C two terminal blocks with optional built-in 120 ohm terminations. 120 ohm termination is an advanced feature typically used to reduce noise and signal reflections. It is recommended to use 120 Ohm termination if you are exceeding 600 feet in distance, 19.6K baud or in a noisy environment. The terminal blocks are shipped with 120 Ohm termination off but can be turned on using the convenient jumper setting located on the left bottom of the terminal block.

Using one USB-485C unit:

Perform a loop back test on one unit: Connect the TX+ to RX+ and TX- to RX- on one USB-485C RS422 port. Connect the USB connector on the cable to the USB port of the computer. Install the USB-485C FTDI driver on the computer per instructions provided. Running a hyper terminal program on the PC, send ASCII characters to the USB-485C converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the same PC port. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of the USB-485C unit is working properly. When there is constant RX data you should see the GREEN light blink. When there is constant TX data you should see the RED light blink.

Using two USB-485C units:

Perform a loop back test on two units: Connect the D+ to D+ and D- to D- on the USB-485C RS485 ports. Connect the two USB connectors to the USB ports of the computers. Install the USB-485C FTDI driver on the computer per instructions provided. Running hyper terminal programs on both PCs, send ASCII characters to the USB-485C converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the 2nd PC port. Repeat the test in the opposite direction. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of both USB-485C units are working properly. When there is constant RX data you should see the GREEN light blink. When there is constant TX data you should see the RED light blink.
