DESCRIPTION
The SerialComm CON-485/422-PI9 is a very high quality and reliable industrial-grade bi-directional port-powered RS232 to RS485 or RS422 converter which converts full-duplex RS232 to a half-duplex two-wire RS485 or full-duplex four-wire RS422. The converter can extend the distance of the RS232 for up to 4000 ft (1.2km). This converter is ideal for any demanding application whether indoor in a lab, server room, office, at home or outdoors within the temperature range of -40ºF to 185ºF (-40ºC to 85ºC). The converter is port-powered and derives power by amplifying the RS232 data lines requiring no external power at all. This converter features auto sensing data turnaround eliminating the need for software drivers or handshake flow control. The CON-485/422-PI9 has a DB9 female connector on the RS232 end, and DB9 male connector on the RS485/RS422 end. A separate terminal block with built-in selectable120 Ohm termination via jumper is included with the product for maximum flexibility. The terminal block plugs into the RS485/RS422 end of the converter, providing screw-lug wire terminations for the port.

Using one CON-485/422-PI9 unit:
Configure the jumpers on the terminal block for RS422 mode. Check that all connections comply with the connection diagrams. Perform a loop back test on one unit: Connect the TX+ to RX+ and TX- to RX- on the RS422 port. Connect the RS232 port to the PC RS232 port. Running a hyper terminal program on the PC, send ASCII characters to the CON-485/422-PI9 converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the same PC port. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of the CON-485/422-PI9 unit is working properly.
Using two CON-485/422-PI9 units:
Configure the jumpers on the terminal block for RS485 or RS422 mode depending on which function you want to test. Check that all connections comply with the connection diagrams. Perform a loop back test on two units: Connect the two RS485 or RS422 ports. Connect the two RS232 ports to two PC RS232 ports. Running hyper terminal programs on both PCs, send ASCII characters to the CON-485/422-PI9 converter from one PC port, and check that the characters are received at the 2nd PC port. Repeat the test in the opposite direction. This tests that the transmit and receive functions of both CON-485/422-PI9 units are working properly.
